National Exams: A Journey of Self-Awareness : How Parents Can Support Their Children

National Exams: A Journey of Self-Awareness — How Parents Can Support Their Children

“Exams do not only test knowledge — they reveal how young people learn to understand themselves.”

In my years of counseling practice, I often meet parents who feel anxious and uncertain about how to support their children during major examinations.

Recently, I read an interview with my Greek colleague, child psychologist Eleni Katsigaraki, and I found her perspective deeply meaningful. I translated and shared some of the key ideas because I believe they offer valuable insights for both parents and students.

She reminds us that national exams are not only about academic performance.

For many young people, they can also become an important experience of self-awareness and personal growth.

During this period, students often evaluate themselves through the expectations of others.

Pressure from grades, social comparison, and uncertainty about the future can intensify their anxiety.

So how can parents truly support their children during this time?

Often, the most powerful support is simple but profound:

Empathy before expectations.

Listening to children, acknowledging their emotions, and encouraging reflection can help them ask meaningful questions such as:
What have I learned?
How have I grown through this experience?

Exams inevitably bring the possibility of success and disappointment.

Yet what truly matters is helping young people understand that effort, resilience, and the ability to adapt are far more important than a single result.

After the exams, another transition begins — adapting to university life and a new stage of independence. Parents can continue to accompany their children by exploring questions like:
What kind of life do you imagine?
What support do you need as you move forward?

In the end, exams are not a final destination.
They are simply one step in the lifelong journey of learning and becoming.

Beyond scores, what young people may gain is something far more valuable:
self-reflection, self-discipline, and resilience.

Because education is not only about passing exams — it is about becoming a person who can face life with courage and understanding.
